Before you start solving a puzzle, and I mean any type of puzzle, regardless of its difficulty level, it is important to prepare your ‘work area’. Technically, all you need to have in order to be able to sort puzzles comfortably is a flat surface. However, there are plenty of other things you should consider before you grab that puzzle box and start taking the pieces out. One major aspect you shouldn’t overlook is how much time you anticipate you’ll need in order to complete the puzzle. If you’ve got a 100 piece puzzle you can solve within the same day, you won’t have problems laying the pieces just about anywhere you’ve got a free flat area. But if you’re striving to solve a 1000 piece puzzle which might take days in a row, you might need a dedicated space where the pieces you’ve already assembled can safely be stored, while the remaining ones go back in the box. Another thing to consider is the fragility of puzzles. Most of these games are made of cardboard, which means they will get damaged in contact with water. For this reason, you should choose an area that doesn’t expose your puzzles to humidity. Also, while you’re solving a jigsaw puzzle, make sure to keep away any glasses or bottles that contain liquids as you can accidentally spill them over the game. Finally, make sure the puzzle pieces are kept out of reach of pets or small children. While they won’t pose any health risks, unless ingested, you know how precious these pieces are, and the importance of each and every single one of them, so you don’t want anyone to.

Boost Problem Solving Skills This is another must-have ability that’s much appreciated in most domains. Whether you work for a corporation or a restaurant, there certainly are many situations in which you have to find quick solutions to unpredictable problems. Puzzles can help you find these solutions faster as they boost your critical thinking, which enables you to analyze problems quickly and find the fastest solution. How can puzzles do this? By challenging your mind to find different approaches in order to assemble the pieces. Solving a puzzle is, in many ways, similar to solving a task at work: you analyze various possible solutions and pick the best one.

Smaller incomes also meant that normal leisure activities such as going to the restaurant were replaced by home entertainment. As they became more affordable, puzzles seemed a perfect choice. Many unemployed carpenters, architects and craftsmen sold or rented jigsaw puzzles created in their home workshops. Attesting to the craze, circulating libraries and drugstores even rented puzzles, charging between three to ten cents per day, depending on their size. At the same time a new innovation appeared, making puzzles even more affordable and easy to manufacture: the introduction of die-cut cardboard puzzles. Die-cut cardboard puzzles meant the beginning of mass production. In 1932, advertising puzzles were also developed. Retail stores offered free puzzles (with brand names or product pictures) when their products were purchased. Novelties didn’t stop here, as the autumn or 1932 saw the introduction of the weekly jigsaw puzzle. The Jig of the Week could be bought for 25 cents, every Wednesday, at newsstands. They came in weekly series, like Jiggers Weekly, Picture Puzzle Weekly, Movie Cut-Ups (featuring popular films) or B-Witching Weekly.
